What degree do you need to be a therapist?

I went through this maze last year :sob:you’ll need at least a master’s if you want to actually practice therapy.

Psychology , good if you’re thinking research or eventually a PhD/PsyD.
Counseling , very direct path to becoming a licensed therapist (LPC/LMHC depending on state).
Social Work (MSW) ,also super common; leads to LCSW and a lot of flexibility in settings.

A bachelor’s alone won’t let you independently practice therapy

Do you really need a master’s or is a bachelor kinda enough?

Bachelor’s is usually not enough for clinical therapy. It can get you roles like case manager, behavioral tech, or mental health aide, but not licensed therapist. To diagnose and provide therapy independently, you’re looking at a master’s + supervised hours + licensing exam

Yeah, it’s confusing as hell. You can’t really be a licensed therapist with just a bachelor’s - you’ll need a master’s in counseling, social work, or clinical psych (depending on your state/country).

So I wanna be a therapist, but apparently there’s a jungle of degrees: psych, counseling, social work… and don’t even get me started on licensing. :joy:

Im curr-ly in my internship, so I can give you the lowdown from experience. To actually practice as a therapist, a master’s degree is basically required - bachelor’s alone only opens doors to entry-level support roles.

After your master’s, you still need supervised clinical hours (often 2000)
