⚖️ Struggling with law essays - how do you even structure them?

I’m fine with research, but once I sit down to write, I can’t figure out how much “analysis vs case references” to balance. Anyone got tips on making law essays less of a mess?

For law essays, think of it like a courtroom argument: start with a clear thesis (your “position”), then use cases/statutes as your evidence, and wrap each section with your own analysis explaining why those authorities support your point. A lot of students just stack case summaries, but professors usually want to see how you interpret them and apply them to the specific legal issue.

As someone deep in law school hell (currently in my 2nd year of postgrad), I totally get this - that “analysis vs. authority” balance is where most people mess up early on. Here’s the simple rule that helped me: cases should support your argument, not replace it.

A decent structure is usually Issue → Rule → Application → Conclusion (basically IRAC). Mention the case briefly, explain the rule from it, then spend most of the paragraph applying that rule to your essay question. If half your paragraph is just describing the case facts, you’re probably doing too much summary and not enough analysis.
