Negative reinforcement examples

I used to mix this up with punishment all the time. But negative reinforcement doesn’t mean something bad happens - it means something unpleasant stops happening when you do the right behavior.

Example:

You put on your seatbelt → the annoying car alarm stops beeping.

So the behavior (putting on the seatbelt) becomes more likely because it removes something annoying.

Another one I realized recently:

You start studying → the stress about the upcoming exam goes down.

It’s actually everywhere in daily life once you start noticing it.

Curious if anyone else has good negative reinforcement examples that make the concept easier to understand.

Here’s one that blows students’ minds:

You study hard → teacher stops nagging you about grades.

Or:

You finally reply to that email → the anxiety about it goes away.

Both are negative reinforcement — the behavior (studying / replying) increases because it removes something unpleasant.

My dog literally trained me with negative reinforcement — I take him out right away so he stops barking at the door. Works every time.

One weird everyday example for me:
I answer an email I’ve been avoiding → the anxiety knot in my stomach disappears.
Negative reinforcement in action

Also: doing dishes so the nagging “sink guilt” goes awway

One for me is:

I finally reply to a message I’ve been avoiding → the stress in my chest instantly disappears.

Negative reinforcement at its finest :joy:

Do you ever notice yourself doing tasks just to stop that background stress in your brain? That’s basically this concept playing out in real life
