what is your weakness
Whenever I get asked this in an interview, my brain immediately bluescreens. I know interviewers expect self-awareness and honesty, but I never know what level of flaw is acceptable.
Too small and it sounds fake. Too real and it sounds like you’re sabotaging your own chances.
How do people usually answer this without sounding like a robot or accidentally admitting something terrible?
I once had an interview where they hit me with the classic “What is your weakness?” and my brain decided to abandon me entirely. Instead of saying something normal like “public speaking” or “time management,” I blurted out something like “I guess I overthink things sometimes.”
Then I had to quickly add that I’ve been working on it by breaking tasks into smaller steps and setting clearer deadlines for myself. The interviewer actually nodded like that was a decent answer, so I guess the trick is showing that you’re aware of it and actively improving.
One weakness that actually bit me in real interviews was over-preparing details and then freezing on the spot… I knew specific facts but couldn’t pivot when they changed the question
for me, the what is your weakness best answer is to keep it real and structured.
Like: say a normal weakness + show what you’re doing about it.
For example:
“My weakness is that I used to overthink tasks and spend too much time trying to make everything perfect. Now I set time limits for each task and focus on finishing first, then improving if needed.”
That’s it. Simple, and shows growth
